22 Ways to Celebrate Earth Day
Friday marks the 52nd annual Earth Day. In response to a massive oil spill in waters near Santa Barbara, CA, Earth Day was coined by Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970. It has been celebrated in the US each April 22nd and went global in 1990. Today, over 1 billion people recognize Earth Day. To celebrate, here are 22 things that you can do to help make a positive impact on the environment:
Take the stairs instead of the elevator
Turn the lights off when you leave the room and when there’s enough light coming in during the day
Do not buy produce that is packaged with Styrofoam that is not marked with a recycling symbol
Bring your reusable bag or net to the fruit and vegetable section instead of using the store provided plastic bags
Bring your reusable bag to the grocery store; don’t have one? – send us an email with your address and we’ll send you a branded one
Bike to work or to your next meeting. The Folson Group offers all employees a free Citibike membership
Take public transportation and leave your car at home
Take a share ride with Via, Uber or Lyft instead of one by yourself
Bring your soft plastics, including bubble wrap, to a grocery store near you that has soft plastic recycling
Recycle glass and metal in the recycle bin where it says metal and glass recycling
Put paper and cardboard in the paper recycling bin
Recycle all fabrics and clothes, even the worn and torn fabrics are re-used for mattress fillers and insulation
Recycle food scraps in the organic recycling bin or bring it to the organic recycling station at your local farmer’s market
Buy compostable garbage bags
Buy your electric supply from a community solar farm
Use the cardio machines that use your weight instead of electricity to operate, like bikes, rowing machines, and stair climbers instead of an electric treadmill
Install UV film on your windows to keep the sun out during the hot season, requiring less A/C and to keep the heat from leaking out during heating season
Replace all light fixtures with LED fixtures
Replace all light bulbs with LED bulbs
Replace you’re A/C with a heat pump
Repair all water leaks. According to the EPA, 6% of all water use comes from leaks
Replace your toilet flapper ever couple of years
We hope you found some items on this list that you can add to your daily habits. If we all incorporate a few of these, we can make a difference together and every day can be Earth Day!
